Coffee Culture

Offering a visitor a cup of coffee in a Cuban home is absolutely necessary. Coffee has been a part of the social fabric of the island since French planters escaping from Haiti in the 18th century made the immigrant bean a viable crop in the mountains of Pinar del Río and Serra Maestra. Taking coffee is a daily ritual that allows time to socialize. Cubans do like their coffee strong, first thing in the morning, after meals, and at chance encounters. Because of the strength of the brew, shots are served in tiny cups.

Café Cubano or caficito is Cuban espresso mixed with sugar while it brews.

Coradito is an espresso topped with varying amounts of steamed milk.

Café con Leche is coffee and hot milk.

Colada is café Cubano ready to be shared. It comes in a larger cup with small accompanying cups for decanting.
